How to Save Money on
Groceries

by Julie McMurchie
These days, everyone wants to
save more money, and spend
less. And, it seems that
everywhere you turn someone
is telling you the  best ways to
save money. Some work, and
some don't. If you are trying to
save money on groceries,
there are some tried and true
methods that really work.
1. Eliminate Waste

You may be surprised how much edible food you waste each day. First and most
obvious, are leftovers. How many times have you found food hiding in the back of your
refrigerator? You know what I'm talking about. Those things you don't remember putting
there, can't remember how long it has been there, and can't even identify what it was
when you put it there. We all do it. What these green, fuzzy tidbits of leftovers represent
is a huge amount of wasted money. So, if you are going to store leftovers in the fridge,
eat them before they go bad. And, if you don't think they'll get used before they spoil,
freeze them for a later date.

Don't throw away vegetable cuttings;  broccoli stalks, asparagus ends, carrot ends, etc.,
are edible and can be used fresh or frozen for vegetable broths. Wash the cuttings, and
store them in the freezer or throw them in a pot with some water to make broth, and
then freeze the broth.

If you are not diligent about putting away leftovers, and using them, at least reduce the
amount of food you prepare so there will be no leftovers.

Make bread crumbs and croutons from stale bread.
