How to Protect Your
Family from Mosquito
Bites
How to Protect Your
Family Against West Nile
Virus

by Julie McMurchie
Adult mosquitoes commonly rest on grass, shrubbery and other foliage.
They typically bite at dusk and dawn, so it is important to protect yourself,
especially during these hours.

1.        Apply mosquito repellent containing DEET, picaradin or oil of
lemon eucalyptus according to label instructions. DEET can be used
safely on children as young as two months.
2.        Wear long sleeve shirts and long pants.
3.        Apply mosquito repellent to the outside of your clothing.
4.        Avoid walking through grass and shrubbery during mosquito
active time.
5.        Remove all stagnant or standing water from your property. This
includes water in green pools, neglected ponds, empty flower pots, etc.
Anything that can holds at least one fluid ounce of water is a potential
breeding ground.
6.        Report neglected pools and stagnant water in your neighborhood
to the Health Department Vector Control Agency. Pools and ponds may
be sprayed to kill the larva and pupa, or mosquito eating fish may be
introduced into the water.
7.        Make sure all screens on windows and doors fit tightly.
