How to Treat Mosquito
Bites
by Julie McMurchie
When a mosquito bites, it deposits saliva on the skin that causes an
immune response. Some people are more sensitive to bites than others,
but anyone who has been bitten knows how irritating and annoying that
little red spot can be. Here are a few home remedies that will help relieve
that itch.
- Topical and oral anti-itch medications containing antihistamines
such as Benadryl. Over the counter cortisone ointments may also
be used, as well as Calamine lotion.
- Baking soda paste or salt paste, rubbing alcohol, ammonia or
vinegar applied to the bite.
- Deodorant, toothpaste and clear nail polish applied to the bite.
- Using a bristle brush to scratch the area and running hot water
over the bite for several minutes can relieve the itch for several
hours. However, scratching may result in breaking the skin,
infection, a longer healing time, and scarring.
